OUR HISTORY

The Barrington Women’s Club, entering its 92nd year, doesn’t look or act its age. Founded in 1934, the club continues to offer members a variety of social, educational, and charitable opportunities.

During the Great Depression, the 1938 hurricane, and other hard times, the club contributed fuel and food to needy families. During World War II, members rolled bandages for soldiers. 

Today our 501c (3) non-profit organization's dedicated members maintain a robust community service component. BWC's fundraising activities contribute more than $5,000 each year to our local communities.

BWC member Dr. Evelyn Coppell  established an award in 1960. The 

award is given annually to a Barrington High School student who shows interest in medicine.

We're serious about helping others. Last winter we collected more than 60 gently-used sweaters and other seasonal wear to help warm our neighbors, donated numerous pounds of food, purchased new toys, books, and stuffed animals for children in shelters, and sent Valentines to veterans. Annually we disperse around $5,000 to support local charities. See below: 

BWC 2026 CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS HELP FIGHT HUNGER LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY: Barrington Women's Club first $1,000 Award goes to Barrington resident Navyn Salem, founder of Edesia, is a force in the global fight against childhood hunger. Her 83,000-square-foot headquarters in the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown produces 8,000 pounds of Plumpy Nut per hour. Plumpy nut is a lifesaving, ready to use peanut-based pastee designed to save children on the brink of starvation. Since opening in 2010, Edesia has reached 30 million children. 

 $500 to TAP-IN 's POTS AND PANS PROGRAM: Tap-In serves multiple clients in four core towns in East Bay. Its program provides stock pots and large pans for large families. The program also provides a housewares starter bin containing various kitchen necessities including pots and pans for clients in the midst of being re-housed. 

 $500 FOR GOOD NEIGHBORS FOOD PANTRY: The breakfast food shelf is filled for now, thanks to BWC's gift. A simple breakfast provides comfort, stability, and a positive start to the day. "We believe choice is dignity, and providing people with the ability to select foods that meet their needs and preferences is an important part of how we serve our community," says Kate Mushipi," executive director of Good Neighbors.  

$500 TO ST. MARY OF THE BAY FOOD PANTRY: The Warren food pantry created a "Weekend Eats" program to relieve the financial stress of families with school aged children who are home seven days during the summer. BWC's donation was used to purchase some of the kids' veggies and fruits like clementines, baby carrots, grapes and bananas. .
